BIF&ST 2021
The Bif&st 2021 program was inevitably reduced – certainly not in terms of its quality but in terms of the number of screenings and venues involved – due to the announced sharp decrease in the financial resources available in this dramatic situation linked to the pandemic and the many economic resources that it demands. The extraordinarily positive results obtained by the previous editions of the Bif&st – including the “open air” one in August 2020 – induce its artistic direction to renew without disruption the formula and the programming scheme adopted in recent years and much appreciated by audience and press, obviously with a series of adjustments due to the new locations used. These are the four historical theaters, in Bari’s Theatre Mile: Petruzzelli, Piccinni, Kursaal, Margherita, the venues of the Film festival in theatres.
The Bif&st is an eminently cultural festival, without worldly frills or infamous red carpets, but it is no less popular, as it carries out an in-depth exploration of the cinema and audiovisuals of many countries (there are about 30 film works from all over the world presented every year, in absolute Italian or world premiere) but also of the best that the history of cinema has narrated through the films of the past. Without knowledge of history there is no future, but neither is there a full understanding of the present. This is the main reason why the Bif&st program – from its origins – includes major retrospectives dedicated to the most eminent figures of cinema and its industry, such as 01 Distribution in 2021, but also a showcase of Italian production that is still unrelased. The Bif&st employs about 200 people between preparation, execution, post-production. The dates of 2020 and 2021 were imposed by the pandemic and saw the Bif&st squeezed between the Venice Film Festival (September) and the Rome Film Festival (October), but from 2022 it will be necessary to return to the traditional spring dates (26 March- April 2).
The audience, mostly young people, has always given an amazing award to the Bif&st program, with an average attendance – in the years preceding the pandemic – of about 75,000 spectators in just 8 days: an almost exclusive feature of the Bif&st if compared to the attendance of other similar events of even longer duration. This provoked surprised and strongly positive comments from those who gathered in Bari: the protagonists of Italian and international cinema and the most qualified press. A large trace of it can be found in the 15-minute video that sums up, with images and statements, the history of the first 11 years of the Bari International Film Festival.
This video, updated to the 2020 edition held largely outdoors in venues such as Piazza Prefettura and Corte del Castello Svevo, will be presented on the opening night of the next Bif&st-Bari International Film Festival, whose 12th edition – under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic – will take place from Saturday 25 September to Saturday 2 October 2021, promoted and financed by the Puglia Region, president Michele Emiliano, and by its Department of Culture, councilor Massimo Bray, produced and financed by the Fondazione Apulia Film Commission, president Simonetta Dellomonaco, with the contribution of the Directorate General for cinema of the Ministry of Culture and the collaboration of the European Union and the City of Bari, mayor Antonio Decaro, and the sponsors ANCE Bari and BAT, INAIL, Gruppo Marino Automobili, Monile -MarioMossa Gioielliere, Aeroporti di Puglia, with this year’s addition of the logo Custodiamo la Cultura in Puglia. Media partner: RAI, Corriere del Mezzogiorno, La Repubblica, Libreria Laterza, La Feltrinelli. With the collaboration of the CSC and the Universities of Bari.
President of the Bif&st is the film director Margarethe von Trotta, honorary president Ettore Scola, creator and artistic director Felice Laudadio, organizational director Angelo Ceglie, consultant of the artistic direction Enrico Magrelli, programmer Giuliana La Volpe.
